Informal employment: An approach to the institutional response in the Araucania Region

Abstract
The high incidence and predominance of informal employment in Chile, specifically in the southern macro-regions (Ñuble, Araucanía, and Los Ríos), is relevant from a public - institutional perspective. This article explored the public-institutional approach and response to labor informality in the Araucanía Region. The objective of the study was to understand the actions and responses of public institutions to address this problem. Using a qualitative approach, the perceptions of authorities and labor experts were collected through semi-structured interviews. This further allowed us to understand and determine the mechanisms the State has in place to address and reduce the incidence of regional informal employment. Among the results, discrepancies were observed between employment indicators that show a high incidence and development of informality and the limited implementation of policies or mechanisms to address this issue. Furthermore, the conclusion is that institutional strengthening and multisectoral strategies are urgently needed for a comprehensive medium- and long-term approach.
