Abstract

Due to the great convenience of diagnosing the severity of the infections caused by LT and VT toxin producing E. coli strains, a work was planned for this purpose using the technique described by Parreira and others (1994).

A total 231 E. coli strains isolated from diarrheic suckling piglets under 40 days of age were used. These strains were tested for the capacity to produce toxins. To determine the production of LT and VT agar-overlay method with Vero cells was used which allowed to detect 15 (6.4%) positive strains to LT production and 16 (6.9%) to the VT synthesis. The technique was simple, economic and rapid for the diagnostic of the LTEC and VTEC strains.
