Abstract

Frothy bloat is a digestive disorder that limits productivity in dairy and beef cattle. Many factors are involved in the sudden onset of bloat, however, in some cases, there is a lack of supporting evidence for their implication in the development of this disorder. To date, it is unknown what triggers the rapid oncoming of frothy bloat and, as a result, there are no completely effective control measures. This article analyzes the factors that are best characterized and that are most relevant for the development of frothy bloat. Current control measures available for cattle are also reviewed.
