Community monitoring of flora and avifauna as an intergenerational integration strategy in the rural community of Buenavista, Colombia

Abstract
Intergenerational integration is fundamental in rural communities, as it enables the transfer of knowledge and experiences that allow the continuity of peasant traditions and production processes based on agroecological principles, and therefore, friendly to biodiversity. One strategy to strengthen such integration is participatory research. With the objective of encouraging the participation of young people from the Buenavista village, located in Roldanillo, Colombia, in community monitoring processes, a simple study of flora and avifauna was designed. Three farms were selected where a forest, a pasture with scattered trees, and an agroforestry coffee system with agroecological management were evaluated and compared. The results showed that agroforestry systems and pastures with scattered trees presented richness (8–15 species) and abundance (14–39 individuals) of flora similar to those of the forest; meanwhile, in the case of avifauna, the records were higher (richness: 5–9 species; abundance: 10–24 individuals) compared to the forest (richness: 1–4 species; abundance: 1–13 individuals). The joint participation of young people and adults made it possible to recognize their role in the community as biodiversity monitors, understanding that their actions can favor or affect it. Likewise, the relevance of transmitting this knowledge accurately to new generations is highlighted, so that they take ownership of their territory and assume an active role as future decision-makers.
