Places of Resistance: Migration in the Informal Space of the La Serena-Coquimbo Conurbation

Abstract
Migration processes have always been present in human history. Particularly in Chile, the recent migration process has intensified in the past 20 years, period during which migrants have mainly settled in informal areas. In this context, the challenge emerges to understand why migrants have appropriated and managed to live in the informal spaces of the La Serena-Coquimbo conurbation, despite socio-environmental segregation. In addition, there is a need to study the transformations undergone by spaces taken over by recent migrants. The methodological approach is exploratory and comparative, and structured on the critical-dialectic method. The main finding suggests that informal spaces become complex spaces that intertwine inhabitation practices with the space’s physical characteristics, forming the so called “migrant places”. It is concluded that these migrant places become a resistance strategy for migrants in their will to remain in the city.
