Abstract

This study evaluates the stream stabilization control works and systems built between 1975 and 1979 at the Cerro Divisadero torrents, Coyhaique, XI Region, Chile.
Important differences between the projected system and the one carried out were detected. The separations of the existent dams have left areas where channel degradation, sediment transport, lateral erosion and slope landslides still occur. A significant number of dams affected with failures that are endangering their stability and function were identified. Also highly active torrential zones still exist in the torrents. The presence of torrential zones and the condition of some of the structures suggest the need to carry out programs to maintain and restore the existing dams, build new structures, and stabilize the slopes.
