Abstract

This paper deals with Spanish discourse markers as viewed by Schiffrin, 1986 and Fuentes 1996. The aim of this study is to show the most frequently used markers, their discourse values and their level of realization within discourse. The data analyzed was taken from a representative sample of Valdivian speakers in an interview situation (Cepeda et al. 1988). The extracts of conversations presented account for the importance of these lexical items in communicative interactions regarding their values, level of realization, and frequence of use, as well as the methodology used for the analysis.
