Operación masacre and its rewritings

Abstract

Operación masacre became the book known nowadays after a rewriting process which lasted for sixteen years after its original edition, published in 1957. Although the critics have noticed the link between Operación masacre’s rewritings and Walsh’s revisions of his literary and political positioning, the changes that the writer introduced in his most famous testimonial novel have not been accurately studied yet. In such sense, this paper analyzes Operación masacre’s rewritings, considering the book text and paratext in its successive editions published between 1957 and 1973. We will show that, within the rewriting process, Walsh’s work on his literary style is inseparable from the revisions of his ideological and political positioning.
