Representations of the Spanish immigrant in Southern Patagonia: a look from literature

Abstract

This article addresses, from a historical and literary perspective, the process of Spanish immigration to Southern Patagonia. To do this, the motives, the main departures from Spain, and the establishment of the Spanish community in the province of Santa Cruz were considered. It is relevant to consider the case of Punta Arenas, as it played a crucial role in the entry of Spanish immigrants to the southern region of Argentina at the beginning of the 20th century. Furthermore, a section is dedicated to analyzing how they organized in the new territory and how this entire process is literary represented, leaving depictions of the Spanish immigrant in poems and fictional texts.
