Perceptions of the role of AI in the development of oral expression in English
Main Article Content
Abstract
Recent advances in AI have led to a paradigm shift in several areas of human development. In English language teaching, it is increasingly important to explore the potential and significant impact of artificial intelligence (AI) through chatbots due to its implications for language teaching and learning processes. In particular, in this study we will identify the specific aspects of oral expression that are significantly developed through the use of AI technologies and explore the perceived benefits and challenges of their use in the development of oral expression. The study follows a mixed sequential explanatory design with two phases: Phase 1, quantitative, involved percentage analysis of responses to a two-section questionnaire; and Phase 2, qualitative, involved thematic analysis of a focus group. The study was conducted in an English teacher education program at a Chilean university, where thirteen participants were selected using non-probabilistic purposive sampling. The Hume AI emotionally intelligent voice model was used to develop conversations in English. The results show that the Hume AI emotionally intelligent voice model is perceived as a proposal that creates a comfortable and risk-free environment for practicing oral expression in English, with effects on fluency and vocabulary. In conclusion, this model can become a transformative multimodal linguistic resource for oral expression practice if its technical limitations are corrected.
