An Exploratory Approach to the Metrical, Formulic, and Thematic Aspects of the Mapuche Song Budi

Abstract
This article is part of the results of the DIUFRO project, code: DI 23-0014, entitled “Re-Analysis of Four Mapuche Songs from Budi (2023-2025)”, at the University of La Frontera. The project involved the study of four Mapuche songs collected in Isla Huapi and Piedra Alta, communities located in the municipality of Puerto Saavedra, Araucanía Region, Chile. The approach to this object of study was informed by the contributions of Walter Ong (1987), Albert Lord (1960), Berkeley Peabody (1975), and others.
From an oralist perspective and in an exploratory manner, this work examines meter, formula, and theme as prominent aspects of Mapuche primary oral discourse, using the corpus of four Budi songs as an example. Thus, the metrics section examines the following aspects of the songs: lines, groups of lines, metrical syllables, meter, and metrical pattern; the formulaic analysis, considering the concept of formula given by Lord (1960), morphosyntactically describes the words or phrases in Mapudungun present in the songs; and the theme section reviews their content based on the notion used in the oral texts of non-literate peoples.
The result of this study will make it possible to understand the formal nature of the language used by pu ülkantufe (the Mapuche singers) in the songs through their metrical description.
