Chiloé 2026: The Odyssey of the Future

Abstract

The Chiloé Archipelago is crossing a historic threshold where the Bicentennial of the Treaty of Tantauco in 2026 intertwines with the construction of the bridge over the Chacao Channel, a mega-engineering project that marks the end of the “liquid border” and acts as a physical “second annexation” to the mainland. This viaduct, which can provocatively be symbolically interpreted as an “amphibious seaside structure”, due to its piles founded deep in the sea, will transform the 30 to 45 minutes crossing into a mere 5 minutes journey, altering the visual grammar of the Cultural Landscape and challenging the aesthetic hegemony of the heritage churches with their three nearly 200 meters high. Faced with this scenario, the archipelago is torn between integration that promises social equity and connectivity and the risk of assimilation that dilutes its amphibious identity and its dimension as a cultural palimpsest, posing the challenge of making the modernity of steel and concrete coexist with the tradition of wood, shingles, community work, and sacred respect for the shoreline.
