Abstract

This essay proposes to address the problem of violence in the Latin American and Caribbean region from three dimensions: structural, institutional and bloody. As we will see, this proposal places state violence and the place that prison occupies in our societies at the center of the analysis. From there we will propose three arguments: firstly, we are talking about a political problem because the importance that the State assumes in these dynamics - along with its private extensions - and the role that in he assumes punitive institutions; secondly, that a correct reading of the three proposed dimensions implies their intersectional interpretation, particularly from the Latin American cases from the categories of Age, Gender and Social Class, and thirdly, that the complexity of the phenomenon calls for structural, collective and relational, since its individualizing understanding is part of the problem. We will take some provisional conclusions from there.
