On the configuration of madness in the nineteenth-century Chile

Abstract

This article relates to the configuration of madness in nineteenth-century Chile. Specifically, it focuses on the period of inclusion, as reflected by the facility in 1852, the first insane asylum - the madhouse. That institution was aimed at the detention of individuals who did not fit the emerging picture of the country illustrated. It examines how the presumed origin of asylum hides a philanthropic project of nation, sustained by the ruling classes of the time. To understand how this speech will modulate a disciplinary system, corresponding to a hitherto non-existent psychiatry, analyzes the events that are waking up to the treatment and disposal of the insane.
