Historical-spatial analysis of the use of the coastal border in San Juan, inland sea in Chiloé

Abstract

The spatialization of historical mapping and a participatory cartography in four stages of time were used to rebuild the evolution of settlements in the coastline of the rural locality of San Juan, commune of Dalcahue, inland sea of Chiloe. The merger of historical and spatial data –in addition to everyday practices as narrated by local inhabitants– reveal that settlements are marked by the use of marine-coastal resources and growth patterns in relation to socioeconomic phenomena occurred in the Chiloe Archipelago. These phenomena marked the socio-spatial evolution of San Juan.
