Abstract

The discussion of the digital world from philosophical theories opens a means to unveil different analogies between the digital condition and the physical world. In addition, a number of studies have investigated the definition of space identity, but not many have addressed the digital identity applied to place. This paper suggests considering the digital identity of physical spaces as a relevant factor in the architectural design process. Similarly, further insights are discussed by reviewing Times Square’s identity transformation process as a paradigmatic case. The study points to two potential ways through which digital technology is capable of interfering with the identity of public spaces: Through direct interaction with digital spaces, dispositifs, and media; and through the mirroring of physical spaces in the digital media, such as the case of social networks or videogames.
