Material Sources to Discuss a Case of Critical Regionalism. The Müller/Weiner Project for Concepción’s Municipal Market, 1940

Abstract
In the aftermath of the 1939 earthquake ––with the mainshock hitting the city of Chillán in Southern Chile–– the newly created Reconstruction and Relief Institution began its work. In this context, Chilean architect Ricardo Müller and Hungarian architect Tibor Weiner won the contest for a new Municipal Market in the city of Concepción. At the time, Müller was best known as one of the designers of the new National Stadium. Weiner, on his part, was a former Hannes Meyer student at the Bauhaus in Dessau, and had arrived in Chile in 1939, when he began collaborating with Müller. The latter died suddenly after the contract had been awarded; the project for which they received the gold medal was modified and was never built as originally planned. Currently, thanks to a collaboration with the Tibor Weiner Archive at the Hungarian Museum of Architecture, access has been granted to some of the original background work, which is presented in this research.
