Amalgam Space. Architectural Theory in the Face of the New Rights Agenda

Abstract

This article presents the results of an academic research project that connects the architectural theory with the New Rights Agenda, addressing equity and sustainability demands in the built environment. Through a critical analysis of foundational texts, the study proposes a new conceptual category: the amalgam space, in an attempt to acknowledge the need for an architectural conception that integrates the diversity of subjects and their often-conflicting demands regarding gender, age, accessibility, perceptions of safety, and environmental and social sustainability. The methodology combines bibliographic review, theoretical analysis, and the study of recent paradigmatic cases within the Uruguayan context. The article concludes that architectural theory is called upon to formulate inclusive, open, and operative conceptual frameworks –such as the amalgam space– that can guide architectural and urban design in times of social transformation.
