Santiago Microcosm: A Club and a Stock Exchange; a Savings Bank and a Theater; a Library and a Museum

Abstract
Santiago Microcosm examines public interior spaces of Santiago during the first decades of the 20th century. As devices that shape the public sphere and precise republican values, these interiors spaces held emerging institutions, and convey the way through which both the State and society grow in complexity; the need to build, preserve, and organize its national identity; and also new ways of social interactions. These ideas are tested through the analysis of three construction axis of republican Santiago and are based on several cases, namely: (i) leisure and business: a club and a stock exchange; (ii) savings and construction: a savings bank and a theater; and (iii) archiving and education: a library and a museum. Each one of these categories encompass political, economic, cultural, and technological conditions of the period addressed by these cases. As a microcosm, they draw lines that expand from the interior to the city outdoors. These interiors indicate the ideals to the ideals that a hundred-year-old republic inscribed on its walls.
