Abstract

Maullín is one of the oldest inhabited territories in the province of Llanquihue, its first urban settlements dating from the early seventeenth century. Recognized as a military frontier for more than two centuries, its process of transformation into a republican territorial entity is less known, overshadowing its social dynamics. From the perspective of geographical, regional, and local history, and based on a review of census and administrative sources from the period 1760-1891, this work analyses the institutional and social processes that made possible the transformation of the old Partido of Carelmapu into the modern Commune of Maullín.
