Abstract

This article aims to revisit the debate on populism as a  phenomenon and as a political concept in post-transitional Argentine social sciences using the tools of conceptual history and intellectual history. Our hypothesis is that the place occupied by the concept of populism in the political and academic debate in Argentina today is partially explained by the polarization of the Argentine political field around antagonistic political projects whose inclusive or exclusive, elitist or popular character is named through  the conceptual opposition between populism and  republicanism. The analysis is limited to its uses and evolution in the main discussions within the Argentine intellectual and academic field in recent history, particularly since the return of democracy in 1983 until the end of Kirchners governments, a critical juncture from which the meanings of populism were especially disputed.
