Abstract

Starting from the question of political imagination and the possibility of a different world, this article investigates whether politics, when considered as a value-driven activity, can provide an alternative to contemporary nihilism. This question is based on the hypothesis set out by Wendy Brown in the opening section of Nihilistic Times, where she analyses Max Weber’s Politics as a Vocation. While Brown answers in the affirmative, we suspect that the concept of politics as a value-driven activity may itself be a product of the nihilistic era. Therefore, rather than offering a way out, it perpetuates it. To carry out this examination, we divide the work into four argumentative steps (a) we address Brown’s characterisation of contemporary nihilism; (b) we consider values and their role in politics; (c) armed with these considerations, we attempt to answer the main question; (d) finally, we reflect on the political imagination and the possibility of a different world.
