Elementary algebra teaching renovation: a contribution from the didactic

Abstract

This paper emphasizes low quality of the present elementary algebra education and shows the feasibility of its renovation sustained in the Didactics as base discipline. In this context, it describes the support offered to two teachers on the lessons preparation and management that favor their students higher order thinking and deep understanding of elementary algebra, according to curricular goals. The paper ends with the characterization of the effect of the strategy to support students learning, and the description of the effect of the experience in the teachers perception about the improvement of their abilities and knowledge in the Didactics of elementary algebra.
